Divulgam-se os dados referentes às ocorrências de violência doméstica participadas à GNR e à PSP em 2009. A violência doméstica constituiu, no ano anterior, o quarto crime mais registado em Portugal e o segundo crime mais registado na tipologia de crimes contra as pessoas.

A Comissão Europeia transmite anualmente ao Conselho Europeu da Primavera os progressos em matéria de igualdade entre homens e mulheres nos Estados-Membros e apresenta os desafios e as prioridades para o futuro. A igualdade entre homens e mulheres é um direito fundamental e um princípio comum na União Europeia. A EU tem prestado um contributo vital para a melhoria da situação feminina e da vida de homens e mulheres, através da criação de um substancial corpo legislativo em matéria de igualdade de tratamento e da integração explícita da dimensão de género nas políticas e nos instrumentos da UE. Ainda que haja uma tendência positiva de maior equidade entre os géneros na sociedade e no mercado de trabalho, persistem as desigualdades que afectam especialmente as mulheres. A actual crise económica veio colocar em risco os avanços em matéria de igualdade entre os géneros e os efeitos da recessão colocam pressões mais acentuadas sobre as mulheres. A recessão pode ser usada como pretexto para limitar ou suprimir medidas em prol da igualdade e a análise das respostas nacionais à crise confirma este risco. Não obstante, os tempos actuais de crise proporcionam uma oportunidade única de mudança, na medida em que a igualdade entre homens e mulheres é pré-condição de crescimento sustentável, emprego, competitividade e coesão social. Os decisores políticos têm a oportunidade de lançar políticas destinadas a tornar o mercado laboral e a sociedade mais equitativos no futuro.

This report presents an overview of the state of women’s health in the European Union. The report focuses on women aged 15 years and older in the 27 EU-Member States, as well as the EEA countries Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, and occasionally Switzerland.

The report is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the report and its goals and methodologies. Chapter 2 deals with changing demographic and socio-economic trends that are pertinent to women’s health. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the main issues in women’s health and describes different trends, risk factors, and health determinants. Supplementing this information, Chapter 4 concentrates on the main lifestyle-related determinants of diseases that affect women, such as tobacco and alcohol use.
